Hello Carol Riddim (2013) – Fireball

Fireball’s Hello Carol Riddim sits neatly in that 2013 stretch where the label was dusting off rootsy material and giving it a fresh dubplate-friendly push, but the real hook here is the remake of The Gladiators’ “Hello Carol” turned into a little four-cut set with six voices. Suga Roy and Conrad Crystal take the title track and keep it close to the old-school feel, while Lukie D’s “Rastaman A Call U” adds that plainspoken, prayerful edge he does so well. Lutan Fyah linking with Thriller U on “Check Check U Self” is the liveliest moment in the batch, and Zareb’s “Let Us Rise” rounds it out with a steadier roots finish. The whole thing landed in 2013, with Fireball leaning on a classic song and a compact cast rather than trying to overpack the riddim.
