Fresh Ear Productions and VP Records paired up for Guardian Angel Riddim in 2007, with Arif Cooper steering the production. Cooper was one of the key hands behind Fresh Ear, a Kingston-rooted outfit that moved easily between hard dancehall, lovers rock and crossover-minded material, and this rhythm sat right in the middle of that sweet spot. The set came out as part of VP’s Riddim Driven series, which gave the project wide shelf life beyond Jamaica and helped it travel through the Caribbean and diaspora circuit.

Guardian Angel is smoother than the rough-edged bashment that dominated plenty of 2007 juggling. The riddim has a warm, melodic swing, with a polished digital bed that leaves room for singers to stretch out and deejays to cut through without crowding the mix. It feels reflective rather than aggressive, which suits the title and the way the songs circle gratitude, love and spiritual guidance.

Alaine’s Rise In Love is the most natural fit, bringing her glossy lovers-rock tone to the front. Da’Ville’s Give Thanks For What You Got plays into the grateful, uplifted mood that runs through the set, while Wayne Marshall’s Give Me Help and Strength pushes the conscious side a little harder. Vybz Kartel’s Missing You Alot adds contrast with its more streetwise edge, and T. O. K. ’s Guardian Angel gives the riddim its anchor cut, balancing harmony and dancehall bite. Voicemail’s Best Days Of My Life keeps the vibe lighter, and Camar’s Before You Go Away rounds things out with another strong melodic turn.
