Grim Reapa Riddim – Takeova Music

Coming in rough and militant, Grim Reapa Riddim has that 2014 dancehall sting to it, all hard drums and bleak title-work that practically dares the artists to go darker. Takeova Music keeps the focus tight with nine cuts from nine different voices, and the strongest moment may be Kryeminal’s “Boots Up (Alkaline Diss), ” which lands right in the middle of a run of hostile, street-level tunes. Blazynahk’s “Nuh Chorus, ” Dajigga’s “Can’t Get Weh, ” and Escobar’s “Diss Dem Dead” all push the same grim energy without sounding identical, which is part of the appeal here. The sequencing feels deliberate too: it opens with a sharper chant, eases into threat-mode, then keeps stacking threats until Temparize closes with “None A Dem, ” like the producer wanted the whole set to play as one escalating warning.
