Grab Up Riddim – Arrow Records

Kingston dancehall in 2016 had a knack for turning a simple bashment groove into a magnet for big names, and Grab Up Riddim sits right in that pocket. Arrow Records keeps the arrangement lean and punchy, with a hard, propulsive bounce that leaves plenty of room for the vocals to cut through. Vybz Kartel’s “Grab It Up” is the obvious centerpiece, but I-Octane brings a sharper, more cautionary edge on “I Nah Play, ” while T. O. K. and Spragga Benz add veteran muscle with their own takes. It’s a compact five-track set, instrumental included, and that economy gives it the feel of a straight-to-the-point dancehall shuffle rather than an overworked compilation.
