Prince Malachi sets the tone on “Gideon Road, ” and that’s a smart way into General Key Riddim, a 2008 Oneness Records production that leans hard into conscious roots without sounding stiff. The lineup moves between Jamaica and Europe, with Ginjah’s “Love Music, ” Junior Kelly’s “Cyaan Reach, ” Prezident Brown’s “Leaders, ” and Tippa Irie’s title-cut salute to unity giving the set plenty of weight. There’s a neat little bit of history here too: the riddim is built around the organ line from Freddie McGregor’s Studio One classic “The Key to the City, ” which gives the whole project that familiar, bright lift underneath the modern arrangement. Nosliw’s “Dein Dein Dein” and Jahcoustix’s “Great Spirit” keep the international angle alive, but Prince Malachi’s opener still feels like the one that locks the spirit of the riddim in place.
