GANGSTER’S ANTHEM RIDDIM produced by MAD HOUSE 1994
Gangsters Anthem Overview
In 1994, some of reggae’s strong voices came together on the Gangsters Anthem Riddim. Daddy Screw, Louie Culture, Terro Fabulous, and Tony Rebel all brought their own style to the project. Daddy Screw, known for songs like “Ghetto Life,” was already making a name for himself in the dancehall scene. Louie Culture, who later became famous for his hit “Gangalee,” gave us two songs on this riddim: “Bogus Badge” and “Revolution Song.” Terro Fabulous, who had found big success with the hit “Action” (with Nadine Sutherland), added his energy to “Gangstas anthem.” Tony Rebel, a well-known reggae singer who won the 1997 Reggae Grammy for his album “Vibes of the Times,” also joined in with the song “Africa.” The riddim itself was built by MAD HOUSE, a label started by the legendary producer Dave Kelly. MAD HOUSE became famous in the 1990s for their fresh sound and for working with many top artists in reggae and dancehall. Dave Kelly’s production style helped shape the sound of the era, and the Gangsters Anthem Riddim is a good example of his work. The riddim used warm, live-sounding instruments and kept the classic reggae beat alive, even as dancehall was becoming more popular. This release stayed true to the roots of reggae. The music had a strong, steady rhythm, and each artist brought real feeling to their song. In a time when reggae was changing, the Gangsters Anthem Riddim was a reminder of the music’s deep roots and lasting power.
