Four Riddim has that early-2000s dancehall shuffle where the vocalists are leaning into the pocket instead of fighting the rhythm, and the cast keeps it lively without ever feeling overcrowded. There’s enough variety here to keep the set moving: Gacha Banton’s “It’s A Lucky Ting, ” Lord San’s pair of cuts, and the Life Boat/Stevie D combinations all push different tones across the same frame. The tracklist also suggests this was cut with the dance in mind, because the solo tunes and duets are spaced in a way that keeps the energy rising and falling cleanly rather than dumping everything at once. By 2003, dancehall riddim projects were moving fast, and this one follows that era’s habit of stacking multiple voices on one riddim while letting the sequencing do some of the heavy lifting.
