Clappas Riddim (2003) – Greensleeves Records

Greensleeves put the Clappas Riddim out in 2003 as part of its long-running rhythm album series, a format that helped define the label’s early-2000s dancehall catalogue. The series was built around one instrumental and a stack of fresh vocals, and Clappas fits that model cleanly with its sharp clapping pattern, skittering drum programming, and a light, restless bounce that leaves plenty of space for the DJs to work.

This one sits in the middle of a very fertile run for Greensleeves, after the big crossover heat of earlier rhythm albums had already made one-riddim sets a major part of the dancehall market. The Clappas cut itself has a crisp, percussive feel that rides more on movement than weight, which is why the songs on it land best when the artists keep the energy quick and playful.

Ce’Cile’s Honey is one of the sweetest spots on the set, riding the rhythm with her usual mix of attitude and melodic ease. Danny English and Egg Nog, already a proven pair by this point, bring the kind of hook-heavy chemistry that made them familiar voices in the early-2000s juggling era. Delly Ranks, Determine, Frisco Kid, Harry Toddler, Irish Man, Jugwa, Mad Anju, Merciless, and Ninja Man all add different shades of streetwise chatter, but Merciless’ 2 Pack of Slam and Ninja Man’s Capital P hit especially hard because they match the riddim’s bounce with sharp-edged delivery.
