Fire Ball Riddim – Tj Records

TJ Records kept Fire Ball Riddim trim and sharp in 2014, with only three cuts carrying the whole set: Slimatic’s “Girl Power” and Vybz Kartel’s “Crashing Head On” plus “Fire Ball” in both radio and raw form. TJ, the Kingston label run by Linton “TJ” White, has long sat in the dancehall lane as a rhythm house that moves comfortably between hit-making singles and full juggling projects, and this one fits that pattern neatly.

The beat has a hard, forward-driving stomp with the kind of taut low end and clipped percussion that leaves space for deejay phrasing. It feels made for Kartel’s clinical delivery, and he uses that space well. “Crashing Head On” pushes the clash energy, while the title cut doubles down on the same gritty momentum with the cleaner radio version beside the raw take. Slimatic’s “Girl Power” softens the edges a little, bringing a more playful, female-centered angle to the riddim without breaking its tough stance.

What makes the release work is the contrast: one younger voice in Slimatic, then Kartel dominating the center with the kind of presence that usually turns a riddim into a talking point. It is a short set, but it plays like a focused snapshot of TJ’s dancehall muscle at the time, built around a beat that is more about pressure than polish.
