At Volcano, the Englishman riddim lands in that late-70s heavyweight zone where Henry “Junjo” Lawes was shaping the channel into something lean, rude, and built for sound systems. Barrington Levy gets the prime real estate twice, with the extended cut opening out the groove and the straight “Englishman” keeping it taut, while Clint Eastwood’s “Brotherman” pushes the rhythm into tougher deejay territory and Rod Taylor’s “Yes We’re Gonna Get Over” brings a more uplifted, militant tone. Errol Scorcher’s “The Daughter Dem Irie” sits right in the middle of that tension, backed by the Roots Radics, and it gives the riddim an extra bit of bite. Levy’s “Englishman” is the anchor here, the kind of vocal that made the riddim’s name stick.
