Produced by Henry Lawes for Volcano and Jah Guidance in 1980, Guidance Riddim captures that early-’80s dancehall-to-roots crossover with a tight, rugged groove and a strong vocal lineup. Michael Prophet’s Youthman is the best-known cut here, joined by Nerious Joseph’s Guidance and Scientist and The Roots Radics’ Night Of The Living Dead, which gives the riddim a darker dubwise edge. The Volcano camp was at its peak in this period, and this set reflects why Lawes’ productions became such a big part of the sound in Kingston at the time.
