Dutty Fowl Riddim – Wiletunes

Wiletunes put out Dutty Fowl Riddim in 2013, and the set carries that raw Ward 21 family energy through every cut. The production sits in the crew’s orbit, with the label credit also tied to Wiletunes and Bada Bada Gang, which fits the project’s rough-edged, Kingston-rooted dancehall lane. The riddim was issued as a five-track various-artists package, and the title alone hints at its attitude: cheeky, streetwise, and built for dancehall talk.

The sound is lean and punchy, with a nagging drum pattern and skittering digital accents that leave plenty of space for fast-chat vocals and taunting lyrics. It has that early-2010s dancehall pressure where the beat feels more like a challenge than a backdrop. Ward 21 anchor the project from both ends, first with Loc on “Dog Friend Dem” and again alongside DeeWunn and Point O on “Nothing Unusual, ” a tune that draws on their knack for playful, sly phrasing. Timberlee’s “Duppy” brings one of the set’s sharper moments, riding the riddim with her usual mix of grit and mischief. Marcy Chin turns up twice, once with Ck on “No Time For Games” and again with Point O on “Cyaa Stop, ” giving the release a strong female thread and some of its most animated back-and-forth. The lineup is small, but every voice on it feels chosen for attitude rather than filler.

If there’s a cut that captures the whole thing, it’s “Nothing Unusual”: veteran Ward 21 control, DeeWunn’s elastic delivery, and Point O’s street-corner lift all locked into one compact dancehall exercise.
