    diseases riddim - greensleeves records

Greensleeves’ Diseases Riddim sits right at the point where early dancehall sharpened into something leaner and more percussive. The set is tied to Henry “Junjo” Lawes, with the Roots Radics behind the play and the Channel One sound giving it that hard, clipped pulse that made his early-’80s output so influential. It landed in 1982, and the rhythm’s reputation has only grown because it cut deep enough to carry both deejay chatter and singjay melody without losing its bite.

The signature version is Michigan and Smiley’s “Diseases, ” the tune that gave the rhythm its name and pushed the whole style into the wider conversation. Papa Michigan and General Smiley were already established from their Studio One years, but this was the record that linked them to Junjo’s dancehall era in a major way. From there, the riddim became a busy vehicle for Linval Thompson’s “Look How Me Sexy, ” Cocoa Tea’s “I’ve Lost My Sonia, ” Josey Wales’ “Let Go Mi Hand, ” Nicodemus’ “Boneman Connection, ” Yellowman’s “Zungu Zungu Zeng, ” Tenor Saw’s “Golden Hen, ” and later cuts from Shaggy and Spragga Benz.

What makes the project last is the contrast between voices and tone. Josey Wales and Nicodemus ride the rhythm with strict deejay timing, while Cocoa Tea and Tenor Saw bring a smoother melodic lift to the same skeletal backdrop. It is a dancehall rhythm that still feels built for sound system pressure: sharp drums, stripped-down bass weight, and enough space for every vocalist to stamp a different personality onto the same foundation.
