Cherry Oh Baby Reloaded (2021) Release Details
Zion High Music returned to one of reggae’s most familiar
melodies with a fresh roots-cut pass on Cherry Oh Baby Riddim
Reloaded, issued in 2021 and later folded into a 2022 digital EP
with Evidence Music. The production sits squarely in the modern
Zion High lane: conscious, devotional roots music with clean
digital polish and a sound-system-friendly low end.
The lineup pulls real weight. Luciano opens
with “Won’t Get Caught Up, ” bringing that veteran tenor and
warning-laden uplift he’s long made his trademark. Max Romeo and
Anthony B team up on “Public Enemy, ” a pairing that gives the
riddim some extra grit, with Romeo’s elder statesman authority
sitting well against Anthony B’s militant fire. Mikey General and
Trinity join forces on “Only In Danger, ” a tune that pushes the
righteous-message side of the project even further. Stranjah
Miller’s “Sound Fi Kill” gives the set a harder edge, more direct
in tone and attack than the more meditative cuts around it.
The music itself rides like a classic roots
revamp should: steady, rolling drums, a deep bass pulse, and enough
space in the arrangement for each singer to stretch out. It recalls
the original “Cherry Oh Baby” melody without treating it like
nostalgia bait. Instead, Zion High uses the familiar framework to
anchor current-day message songs about vigilance, warfare, and
staying spiritually upright. That balance between heritage and
present-tense reasoning is what makes the release work. It feels
like a careful revoicing of a classic pattern, with the veteran
names doing most of the heavy lifting.
