House Of Riddim have been one of the more reliable Austrian roots outfits in the European reggae circuit, working as both a live band and a production unit and putting out a steady run of riddim projects over the years. Serious Time sits comfortably in that catalogue: a 2021 one-riddim set with a conscious, rootsy brief and a heavy list of voices that stretches across veteran names and newer European-linked singers. It arrived in August 2021 and was issued under the House Of Riddim banner.

The riddim itself has that sober, militant feel the title promises. It carries a steady one-drop pulse, clipped guitar work, warm bass pressure and a stripped-back arrangement that leaves room for the vocals to carry the message. The mood is serious without being bleak, with songs circling warning, endurance, faith and social pressure rather than chasing easy party energy.

Anthony B’s Bun The Wicked Man and Chuck Fenda’s Early This Morning set the tone with two of the most recognisable voices on the set, both artists long associated with straight-ahead roots militancy. Perfect Giddimani’s Old Fashion and Natty King’s Plandemic push the conscious angle further, while Turbulence’s Bun Fiyah and Jah Bouks’ No Vacancy add more bite and urgency. The deeper cuts from Teacha Dee, Rebellion The Recaller, Da Fuchaman, Don Tippa, Ras Nelson, Klyve and Kuzzik help fill out a juggling that feels deliberately international in reach.

What makes Serious Time work is the balance between veteran authority and scene-wide variety. It feels less like a throwaway compilation and more like a proper roots package built for sound system play, where each singer gets a clear lane and the riddim keeps the pressure on.
