Two cuts, one sharp little dancehall statement. Bust Blank Riddim comes out of Dragon Records in 1989 with the kind of lean, no-frills setup that leaves plenty of room for attitude, and that’s exactly where Mad Cobra and Red Dragon step in. Mad Cobra’s Respect Women brings a tougher, message-minded edge, while Red Dragon’s title tune is the one that really locks the riddim into memory, carried by his unmistakable deejay attack and the kind of phrasing that made late-’80s sound systems lean in. Dragon’s own Leroy May is behind the production credit, which gives the whole thing a personal stamp rather than a faceless studio job. It’s a compact set, but the balance between Cobra’s straight-talk and Red Dragon’s flagship anthem keeps the riddim moving with purpose, and Red Dragon’s Bust Blank is the cut that leaves the strongest mark.
