Brainstorm Riddim (2004) – Kingston 6 Rekords

Buju Banton is the one that jumps out first on Brainstorm Riddim, and “The Reply” gives Kingston 6 Rekords’ 2004 juggling a sharp, heavyweight edge before the rest of the set starts pulling in different directions. Christopher’s “Thug Life” and Lexxus’ “Man Control” keep the energy grimy and streetwise, while Erup’s “Layba Lay” cuts through with a more playful lift; that mix makes the riddim feel like it was designed for both big-voice anthem work and rougher dancehall talking. Kingston 6 sits the groove somewhere between militant and bouncy, and Buju’s presence gives it a little more bite than your average early-2000s compilation. A nice little detour is Raw Deal’s “Love The Ras, ” tucked in near the end.
