Black Rain Riddim – Bomb Rush Records

In 2006, when rootsy one-riddim projects were still carrying plenty of weight in dancehall, Bomb Rush Records cut Black Rain with a lean 11-voiced lineup that keeps the focus on the groove rather than the star count. The set pairs Alaine’s bruised “Shoulda Never” with sharp turns from Assassin and Spragga Benz on “Ova Ya” and Cecile on “Some A Da Ting Deh, ” while T. O. K. , Mr Easy and M’lonie add a wider spread of tones across the ride. Roshaun “Bay C” Clarke is credited on the production side, and the riddim itself has that mid-2000s digital-reggae tension: clipped drum programming, a low-slung bass line, and enough space for the singers to stretch their hooks. It keeps a dry, steady pulse, with the vocals carrying most of the drama.
