Black Board Riddim – Maximum Sound

Somewhere in the middle of Maximum Sound’s 2007 run, Black Board rides a lean one-drop with a dry, militant feel, letting the bass sit low and steady while the skank keeps the whole thing moving. Frenchie’s cut is short and uncluttered, and the vocal side leans hard into roots-minded chants and warning songs from Alborosie, Anthony B, Burro Banton, Chezidek, Morgan Heritage, and Sizzla. Alborosie’s “Holy Mount Zion” and Sizzla’s “Africa Prepare” carry the heaviest spiritual edge, while Burro Banton’s “Lyrics Daddy” brings a rougher deejay cut into the frame. The release runs to seven tracks, six on the Apple Music version, and stays close to three-to-four-minute songs, which suits the stripped arrangement. It’s the kind of riddim where the guitar chop, bass line, and restrained drum pattern do the talking.
