Beacon Riddim – Trackhouse Records

With just four cuts and five voices, Beacon Riddim feels more like a tight showcase than a sprawling compilation, and that compact setup gives Trackhouse Records room to keep the energy sharp. Nymron and Sahie’s “At All” and Seya’s “Boots Up” lean into the kind of stripped, street-level dancehall phrasing that lets the rhythm do plenty of the work, while Stein’s “Bullet” sounds built for the faster, harder corners of the party. The obvious anchor here is Vybz Kartel’s “Be Free, ” which gives the set its biggest name and its biggest pull. Released in 2014, with later listings placing it in Trackhouse’s 2015 Beacon Riddim EP package, this one sits right in that mid-2010s lane where compact juggling sets were still carrying a lot of weight.
