Buccaneer’s Opera House label was already one of the sharper names in late-’90s dancehall, and Barracuda Riddim lands right in that run. Built in 1999, it has the kind of raw, forward-driving pulse that made that era so infectious: clipped drums, a sturdy low end, and a jittery, street-ready swing that leaves plenty of room for fast-talking deejays to ride the pocket. Buccaneer, a Kingston-born dancehall artist who also moved into production through Opera House, knew how to balance a playful hook with hard-edged yard energy, and that sensibility is all over this rhythm.
The lineup is stacked with voices that fit the sound from different angles. Alley Cat brings his sharp, no-nonsense delivery to “Anywhere, ” while Buccaneer’s own “Dash Weh” adds a producer’s self-assured stamp. Frisco Kid’s “Look Again” pushes the rhythm with his quick, animated phrasing, and General B’s “Nutting Funny” keeps the tension high with a blunt, teasing style. Ghost’s “Horny” adds one of the more memorable character pieces, Mr. Vegas turns “True Or False” into a catchy singjay cut, and Red Rat’s “Gwaan” brings the off-kilter swagger that helped define his late-’90s rise. The set captures a moment when Opera House was firing on all cylinders, and Barracuda sits comfortably alongside the label’s bigger bashment work from the period.
