Bangarang Riddim dates back to 1968 and pulls together a deep cross-section of Jamaican reggae history, with the groove credited to Coxsone Dodd, Clancy Eccles, Bunny Lee, King Jammy, Tappa Zukie, Freddie McGregor, and other hands across labels like Studio One, Lee’s, Ja-Man, Jammy’s, Rockers, and Digital-B. The selection moves from Clancy Eccles’ original Bangarang Crash and the early-watering sides by Derrick Morgan and Dawn Love to later cuts from Horace Andy, Brigadier Jerry, Buju Banton, Anthony Red Rose, and Admiral Tibet. It also catches the long life of the tune through versions from the 1970s, ’80s, and ’90s, with Freddie McGregor’s Bangarang and Brigadier Jerry’s take among the more familiar highlights. Rooted in classic roots and sound system culture, this is one of those riddims that shows how a single idea can keep resurfacing across decades and producers.
