Backstabber Riddim – Next Generation Family

Oneness Records kicked off 2011 with Backstabber Riddim, a roots-heavy set from Munich that sits comfortably in the label’s catalogue of polished, international reggae productions. The sound is sturdy and modern at once: deep bass, clipped drum work, and a sober, militant edge that keeps the whole thing moving without losing its old-school weight.

Fyah T is the thread running through the project. Based in Munich, he is both a singer and producer, and his link with Jah Mason on “Backstabba” gives the riddim an immediate lift. Jah Mason’s voice brings the kind of seasoned, chant-like authority that has made him a fixture of conscious reggae, while Fyah T’s own presence gives the release a more personal stamp.

The rest of the lineup keeps that same warning-tone energy. Turbulence turns in “We Remain, ” Lutan Fyah sharpens the message on “Stop, ” and Prezident Brown joins Raymond Wright on “Backstabbing” for one of the more direct cuts on the set. Jah Marnyah’s “Be Careful” adds a leaner, cautionary angle, while Mark Wonder’s “Divine Livity” broadens the mood with more uplift. Queen Omega and Naptali were also part of the original selection, adding even more depth to a release that never feels thin.

This is a riddim built for meditation and confrontation at the same time. The title says betrayal, but the music keeps its balance, giving each singer enough room to press a message without breaking the groove.
