BABYLON RIDDIM produced by SIRIUS RECORDS 2001
Babylon Overview
In 2001, the roots reggae scene saw a strong addition with the release of a new anthology built around the Babylon Riddim. The project was shaped by the classic rocksteady flow, which is central to sound system culture. These rhythms, with their deep basslines and sharp snares, were made to be played loud on big speakers, bringing people together at dances and street parties. A key part of the sound came from the dub engineer. Their skills in the studio helped push the riddim’s energy, using effects and mixing tricks to make each track stand out. This gave the songs extra life and made them favorites for selectors and DJs. The producer behind the project, SIRIUS RECORDS, is known for supporting roots reggae and dancehall in the UK. The label built a reputation for working with respected artists and keeping the roots sound alive during a time when digital and dancehall styles were taking over. SIRIUS RECORDS has been praised for its authentic approach and for helping roots reggae reach new listeners. On this anthology, three artists stood out. African Simba delivered “Strengthen The O.A.U,” bringing his signature conscious style. Errol Bellot, known for his classic track “Miss Wire Waist,” added “Babylon” to the mix, showing his deep roots in the UK reggae scene. Nereus Joseph, who has worked with Mad Professor and other key figures, contributed “Make A Plan,” adding soulful vocals and strong lyrics.
