50 50 Riddim – Starstruck Records

Star$truck Records came into the 50/50 riddim with a run of late-2014 and early-2015 releases that had already put Matthew “Esco Da Shocker” Thompson and Delmar Drummond on the map as a serious production team. By the time this juggling landed, the label had momentum from projects like Legendary, Starstruck, Spitfire and Glory, and the 50/50 fit neatly into that catalogue as a polished reggae compilation with crossover appeal. The release was issued in 2015, with the full album appearing in March and the promo circulating earlier that year.

The riddim sits in that sweet spot between rootsy reggae warmth and contemporary radio-ready sheen. It has a mellow, mid-tempo pulse, a clean digital bounce, and enough space for the singers to stretch out their hooks without the rhythm losing its shape. The whole thing feels built for grown-listener replay rather than hype alone, with a smooth bassline and light, uncluttered arrangement doing most of the heavy lifting.

The lineup is strong because it mixes veterans and younger voices without forcing the balance. Chaka Demus and Pliers bring instant name recognition and chemistry on Tek It In, while Exco Levi’s What A Day adds the thoughtful, roots-conscious edge he has long been known for. Louie Culture sounds right at home on Love’s Got a Hold On Me, and Nadine Sutherland gives Who’s Gonna Love Me a soulful lift. Hezron’s Can’t Get Enough, Esco’s Hooked On You and I-Candy’s Champion round out a set that keeps the riddim moving through lovers-rock sentiment, uplift and easygoing reggae swing.
