Black Scorpion Records wasn’t chasing the rootsy side of its catalogue here; Rich Year Riddim lands as a straight 2015 dancehall set, and a fairly busy one at that, with 11 cuts from Rambo, Pashent, Flex Aka Triple Jay, Spinal, Rage, Dhextrus, Xl Di General and Intiple. The title track gets double duty from Spinal in raw and radio versions, while Xl Di General’s “We Run It” also comes in clean and raw, which tells you this was assembled with sound system play in mind. The production has that brash, mid-2010s digital shuffle: clipped drums, a rolling bassline, and just enough space for the deejays to push their talkative, streetwise patter. It’s the kind of riddim that keeps the energy moving without overcomplicating the pattern, anchored by a sturdy bass pulse and quick, percussive forward drive.
