Yaniko Roots Riddim – Kt Records

Yaniko Roots rides on a deep, rootsy groove with a firm bassline and a clean, militant skank that leaves plenty of room for the singers to stretch out. KT Records lined up a strong 2008 cast here, and the chemistry is in the contrast: Admiral Tibett and Mickey General bring that seasoned conscious chant style, while Sizzla, Luciano, George Nooks, Jah Mason and Anthony B push the riddim into more spiritual, reflective territory. Capelton’s “Killing Spree” adds a harder edge, and the bonus cut from Zoe featuring Chuck Fender gives the set a little extra lift. With ten tracks and eleven voices, it sits right in that late-2000s reggae moment when one riddim could still carry a whole meditation, from plea-to-Jah tunes to love songs and social commentary.
