War Riddim – Ashquad

Ashquad’s 2002 War Riddim keeps the focus tight: just two vocal cuts and the instrumental, but the pairing of Capleton and Fred Locks gives it real weight. Rather than chasing glossy crossover polish, the riddim sits in a rugged roots lane, with a stern drum pattern and a heavy, marching pulse that leaves plenty of room for the voices to cut through. Capleton’s “Tafari” brings the militant edge, while Fred Locks on “She Got Caught Up” slows the temperature a little and leans into the conscious side of the set. That contrast is the point of the release, and the final “Version” lets the rhythm breathe on its own, underlining how sparing Ashquad kept the whole project.
