Kingston’s 2011 dancehall circuit was still leaning hard on sharp studio craft and artist chemistry, and Downsound’s VSOP Riddim fits right into that moment with a taut, percussive pulse and just enough swagger to carry a varied lineup. Beenie Man opens it with “Be Ready, ” which lands like a veteran resetting the tone, while Harry Toddler gets two bites at the cherry on “Most Wanted” and the raw/radio versions of “Ur Cock, ” giving the riddim a rougher street edge. G Warren’s “Bottle Party” and Khago’s “Fat Supm’n Joke” keep the energy bouncing, and Toya’s “U A Life” adds some attitude from the label’s younger camp. Produced by Downsound’s in-house team after the Kingston studio reopened, the set feels like a snapshot of a label pushing new blood beside established names.
