Black House Records’ Villian Riddim sits in the middle of a busy 2004 run for the label, and it’s the sort of dancehall cut that leans hard on gun-talk energy and sharp one-drop syncopation rather than fancy arrangement. Assassin sets the tone with “Nah Run” and “Not Affraid, ” while Bounty Killer’s “Target” and Elephant Man’s “Die By Gun” push the clash-ready angle even further; Spragga Benz keeps it taut on “We Ready, ” and Vybz Kartel gets the biggest share of the board with four cuts, including “More Life” and “Prove Dat. ” The riddim’s pull comes from its stripped, driving bassline and clipped percussion, which leave plenty of room for the deejays to chop their delivery. It moves at a brisk, no-nonsense pace, with the vocal attack doing most of the work.
