twin city riddim - two friends records

Twin City Riddim comes from Michael Bennett’s Two Friends camp, a name that sits right in the pocket of late-80s Jamaican dancehall moving into slicker, more radio-ready territory. Bennett was already an established producer by then, and this era of his work helped set up the sound he would later push further with voices like Brian and Tony Gold, Cocoa Tea, Shabba Ranks, and Gregory Isaacs.

The riddim itself has that late-eighties bounce: bright, trim, and buoyant, with enough space for singers and deejays to ride it differently without the rhythm ever sounding crowded. It has the kind of polished pulse that made a lot of the best studio-band dancehall from that period travel well between sound systems and home stereo play. The version cut here keeps the tune moving in a way that makes the vocal versions feel like part of one conversation rather than separate records.

Gregory Isaacs’ “Meet Me At The Same Corner” is the anchor for mood and weight, with his smooth, slightly weary delivery giving the riddim a more adult, romantic pull. Cocoa Tea’s “On Top Of The World” brings a lighter, uplifted feel, while Shabba Ranks’ “Haffi Kill Me Dead” sharpens the project with a tougher deejay edge. Brian and Tony Gold’s “It’s Been So Long” and their duet with Tuffest on “Dreaming” show the harmonies that would soon become one of the duo’s defining strengths, even before their later crossover peak. Home T, Little Twitch, King Everald, Lady English and Miss Linda, and Mr. Churchill add variety across the set, giving the riddim singer cuts, combination work, and harder chat in equal measure.

What makes Twin City interesting is how clearly it captures Two Friends at a formative stage: a strong rhythm, a heavyweight cast, and a blend of lovers rock sweetness and street-level dancehall energy that points toward where the producer’s next big run would go.
