Already you can hear why Real Rock keeps getting pulled back into the dance: that steppers-ready pulse and dry, ringing guitar chop give Johnny Osbourne’s “Chopper” and Pad Anthony’s “Boom” plenty of room to work, while the whole thing sits in that sturdy Channel One pocket that helped define early-’80s roots reggae. The original Real Rock line goes back to Sound Dimension’s 1967 Studio One cut, and this 1984 Hit Bound issue leans into that history without dressing it up too much, letting the rhythm carry the weight. Osbourne’s cut has the sharper edge, Pad Anthony rides it a little looser, and the closing “Real Rock - Version” strips it back to the bare instrumental framework, which is exactly where this riddim shows its muscle.
