Tun It Up Ah Nadda Notch Riddim – Heavy Beat Records

Heavy Beat Records came to this one with the kind of veteran polish that has long defined Willie Lindo’s catalogue: clean musicianship, sturdy bass lines, and a singer-friendly groove that lets each voice settle in without crowding the mix. Tun It Up Ah Nadda Notch Riddim is a 2004 Riddim Driven set, and it pairs two related rhythms, Screw Face and Mean Girl, into one compact package that moves between roots firmness and lovers-rock sweetness.

The lineup reflects Heavy Beat’s habit of mixing generations. Al Campbell, the Kingston-born veteran whose career stretches back to the late 1960s, brings authority on “Nah Sorry Fi Dem” and “Speak The Truth, ” both of which sit comfortably in his conscientious, melodious style. Glen Washington, the Clarendon singer known for his smooth reggae-and-soca delivery, turns in two of the strongest cuts with “Can’t Leave You No More” and “I Found Me A Love, ” giving the project a warm, soulful center. Jimmy Riley’s “Love Is The Reason” adds that classic lover’s-rock patience, while Don Yute’s “Another Fire” and the Kashief Lindo and Don Yute duet “Roof Over My Head” bring a younger dancehall edge into the mix.

The riddim works because it never gets too busy. The drum pattern stays firm, the bass carries the weight, and the arrangements leave space for plainspoken hooks and devotional lines. “Back Door Deal, ” “No Show, ” and “Give Thanks To The Father” sharpen that blend of social commentary and everyday romance, making this one of those Heavy Beat sets that feels both seasoned and easy to replay.
