Tribute Riddim (2014) – Ja Productions

JA Productions’ Tribute Riddim lands in the company’s 2014 dancehall run with a mood that feels more reflective than rowdy, even with Blak Ryno, Chi Ching Ching, Dami aka Young Roach, Ishawna and Munga all stepping in. The cut has that mid-tempo, hard-edged swing JA liked to work with in that period: enough knock in the drums to keep it moving, but space for the voices to carry the theme without getting crowded out. Blak Ryno’s “The Future” and Ishawna’s “Domesticated” bring the clearest sense of direction here, while Munga’s “Tribute (R-I-P)” pushes the title idea right into memorial mode. The instrumental closes it out cleanly, and that last pass lets the riddim’s skeletal, chant-ready pattern do the talking on its own.
