Toita Izvozvo Riddim – Hoodstar

By 2012, dancehall in Zimbabwe was leaning hard into local-language cuts and tougher, more stripped-back riddims, and Toita Izvozvo lands right in that pocket. Hoodstar keeps the arrangement lean and functional, letting the bass do the heavy lifting while the drums tick with a clipped, mid-tempo bounce that leaves plenty of room for the vocals to cut through. The lineup is spread across eight artists, but Fyahman’s “Mazvikokota, ” Jonedaz’s “Wakandisiya, ” and Kilamani’s pair of tunes, “One In A Million” and “Zim Dermaco, ” give the set its clearest shape. Natoh Fyah and Nonsi add more of that pointed, street-level delivery, while the final version cut leaves the rhythm exposed in its simplest form. It’s the kind of riddim that lives on the pull of the bassline and the dry, direct phrasing riding over it.
