Toasted Riddim – Tj Records

TJ Records’ Toasted Riddim arrived in 2013 as a sharp, party-ready dancehall juggling with a distinctly modern Kingston edge. The label behind it had already earned a reputation for sturdy rhythm work and for putting premium voices on the same frame without losing a sense of identity. That approach is all over this one: the instrumental is bright, clipped, and built for movement, with enough bounce in the drums and bass to keep the versions lively rather than heavy.

Aidonia’s Boom Flick is the tune most people remember from the set, and it fits his tough, sly delivery perfectly. Vybz Kartel’s Pussy Me Say and Konshens’ Big People Ting bring two different kinds of magnetism: Kartel rides the riddim with that cold, controlled swagger he was known for in the early 2010s, while Konshens gives it a more conversational, crowd-facing energy. Mad Cobra’s Ordinary adds veteran weight, and Voicemail’s Sivva Teetimus Rock draws on the more playful side of the beat. Teetimus Rock Star’s Nuh Fraid A Nuh Bwoy and Masicka’s Wine And Dont Stop widen the lineup with younger heat, helping the riddim land as both a showcase and a snapshot of where dancehall was headed at the time.
