The Mightiest Riddim – Frenchie Maximum Sound

Frenchie’s Maximum Sound was already deep into its 20th year when The Mightiest Riddim landed in 2013, and the set fits neatly into the label’s long-running habit of pairing heavyweight voices with sturdy, road-tested roots production. The riddim sits in that sweet spot between modern digital polish and old-school weight: a steady, marching bass line, crisp drum programming, skanking guitar movement, and enough open space for the singers to stretch out without crowding the groove.

Tarrus Riley gives the set one of its strongest cuts with “Life’s Story, ” bringing his smooth, measured tenor to a song that feels reflective rather than aggressive. Exco Levi adds a spiritual, conscious edge on “Take A Walk In My Shoes, ” a natural fit for his reputation as one of the more rooted voices in Canadian reggae. Mr. Vegas comes in with “Mighty God, ” showing the more serious side of an artist best known for dancehall charisma, while Anthony B’s “Can’t Take No More” keeps the pressure on with his forceful, urgent delivery. Lukie D’s “High” is one of the more melodic moments, and his long history as a singer who can move between reggae and dancehall makes him an easy match for the riddim’s forward motion. Ikaya’s “So Rough” brings a tougher female perspective, and Fantan Mojah closes the circle with “Out Of Many, ” using his familiar rootsy conviction to push the conscious message home.
