STUDIO ROOM RIDDIM produced by KINGS OF KINGS 1997
Studio Room Overview
Kings of Kings, a well-known label in Jamaican dancehall, released the Studio Room Riddim in 1997. The label is famous for helping many artists break through in the late 1990s and for working with major names in the genre. Kings of Kings, founded by producer Colin “Bulby” York, has produced several influential riddims over the years. The Studio Room Riddim gave a platform to both new and rising artists. Benzly Hype! brought his own style to the track “Studio Room.” Don Yute & Mr Vegas teamed up for “Ants,” a song that brought energy to the mix. Mr Vegas, who would later find international fame with his hit “Heads High,” was still early in his career at this time. Iley Dread delivered “Work Hard,” adding a message of perseverance. Merciless, known for his lyrical clashes and hits like “Mavis,” contributed “Plantain Farmer.” Mikey Dangerous performed “Performance Drive,” showing his smooth vocal style—years before he would win a Juno Award for reggae recording. Other artists on the riddim included Norris Man & Frisco Kid with “You Evil One,” Singing Melody’s “I Like It,” Spanner Banner’s “Come See Me,” and the powerful duo Tanya Stephens & Ce’Cile on “Murder Tonight.” Terror Fabulous & Chrisinti closed out the set with “Humanity.” Studio Room Riddim was a key part of dancehall playlists in 1997, marking a moment when fresh voices and seasoned talent came together on one beat.
