Solid Riddim (2003) – Stringray Records

Carrying a lean three-vocal cut plus version, this 2003 Stingray workout keeps the focus on a tough, rootsy pulse rather than crowding the rhythm with too many voices. Luciano’s “Gideon War” brings the conscious fire, while Lukie D’s “Dog World” and Tony Curtis’s “Sandra” lean into the same steady groove from different angles, one more tense and streetwise, the other smoother and more melodic. Stingray’s Carlton and Raymond McLeod were already building a reliable catalog around this period, and here they keep the arrangement uncluttered so the bassline can do most of the talking. The final version cut, “Solid Riddim, ” leaves the whole thing open-ended and confirms the instrumental was meant to carry the weight of the project just as much as the singers.
