Shine Eye Girl Riddim – Thompson Sound

2016 was a year when reggae riddims were leaning hard on classic one-drop pulse and throwback names, and Thompson Sound’s Shine Eye Girl fits that moment with a tidy five-song set that keeps the groove warm and unfussy. The title itself nods to the older Black Uhuru “Shine Eye Girl” lineage, but this version is all about modern roots voices riding a laid-back, bassy cut with enough space for the singers to phrase naturally. Half Pint’s “Promise Is A Comfort” is the veteran anchor here, while Jigsy King’s “Youth Dem A Hustle” adds a sharper, streetwise edge and Tshai’s “Shine Eye Boy” gives the project its hook. By the time it lands on “Youth Dem A Hustle, ” the riddim has settled into a patient, rootsy stride that keeps the whole set locked in.
