117 Records’ Salem Riddim sits in the middle of the label’s 2015 run, and it’s a tight six-cut juggling rather than a bloated compilation. The one that catches the ear quickest is Chanter’s “One Step, ” which pushes the rhythm with a plainspoken, forward-moving groove, while Bionic Clarke’s “We Can Do It” adds a more uplifting touch without breaking the mood. Dubvisionist gets a second pass on the riddim with “One Step Dub, ” then the project closes out in proper instrumental style with M7 Allstars’ version and the Frog Dub from Dubvisionist and Blunt Command. It’s the kind of release that feels aimed at selectors as much as listeners, and by 2015 117 Records already had a small but active catalogue of reggae riddims, with Salem fitting neatly into that year’s output.
