Ruffneck Overview
In 1999, the dancehall scene was full of energy, and one of the hottest sounds was the Ruffneck Riddim. This dancehall drop was heard at many parties and dance events that year. The riddim’s upbeat style made it easy for DJs to mix with other genres, like hip hop and soca, bringing more people to the dancefloor. Delly Ranks was one of the standout artists on this riddim with his song "Wha Me Hear." Delly Ranks is known for his strong voice and clever lyrics. He has also worked as a producer, helping other artists shape their sound. Goofy Ft Brian & Tony Gold brought the crowd together with "Big Bumper Pam," a tune that became popular in Jamaica’s party scene. Tony Gold is well known for his work with Shaggy, especially on the hit "Hey Sexy Lady." Brian also joined the fun on "Big Bumper Pam," adding his own style. Lady G, a respected female deejay, delivered "Niceness." She is famous for her hit "Man a Bad Man" and has paved the way for women in dancehall. Powerman’s "Sex Was A Tournament" added humor and energy to the mix. Behind the scenes, Richard Carnegie and Horace Lawrence co-produced this riddim for Jamdown Records. Jamdown Records is known for releasing many dancehall classics. The work of these producers helped make the sound stand out in 1999 and kept the island’s dancehall spirit alive.
