Rub-A-Dub Riddim (2008) – No Doubt Records

Kemar “DJ Flava” McGregor’s No Doubt Records set this one up in 2008 as a modern pass at classic rub-a-dub feel, and the rhythm earns that title. It sits in that roots-dancehall pocket where the drums stay steady, the bassline stays warm and forward, and the whole thing has room for conscious vocals rather than flash. The pattern recalls the older Kingston school without sounding dusty, which is why it drew a strong cross-section of singers and deejays to it.

The lineup gives the project its shape. Capleton’s “Same Old Story” brings fire and frustration, while Anthony B’s “Striving” and Etana’s “I Am Not Afraid” push the set into uplift and perseverance. Morgan Heritage’s “Nothing To Smile About” and Ginjah’s “Never Lost My Way” keep the conscious tone intact, and Richie Spice’s “Di Plane Land” adds another reflective cut. I-Octane’s “Nuh Frighten Wi” gives the riddim a sharper edge, while Junior Reid, Natural Black, Nesbeth, Lymie Murray, Teflon and Spanner Banner each deepen the showcase with voices that know how to work a meditative backdrop.

What makes the release land is the balance between attitude and restraint. McGregor keeps the production clean enough for the bass to breathe, but there’s enough drive in the rhythm to carry the tougher tunes. This was a strong No Doubt Records statement in the period when McGregor was already known for polished roots productions, and the set remains one of the more memorable late-2000s reggae juggling pieces around that rub-a-dub idea.
