Rode Kode Riddim – Russell Records / Genesiz Records

2021 was a busy year for hard-edged dancehall riddims, and Rode Kode sat right in that pocket with a sharp, stripped-down approach that left plenty of room for the voices. Russell Records and Genesiz Records lined up 10 cuts across the project, with Practykal’s “I Am In Love, ” Drastic’s “9 Life, ” and Zamoni’s “Miss Goody” setting the tone early before Jay Abnormal and Lani link for “Bag A Gyal. ” One useful detail here is that the set came out in mid-October 2021, which places it squarely in that post-summer run of lean, club-ready juggling releases. The sequencing keeps the energy moving without overloading the listener, closing with the title version so the rhythm itself gets the last word.
