ROCKFORT ROCK RIDDIM produced by STEELIE & CLEVIE 1993
Rockfort Rock Overview
In 1993, the Rockfort Rock Riddim became a foundation sound in reggae and dancehall events. This rhythm was a favorite for sound system selectors, who used it to keep crowds moving and energized. In sound system culture, a strong riddim like this is important. It gives DJs a powerful base for their sets and lets artists show their unique style over a familiar beat. The production team behind this riddim, Steely & Clevie, played a big part in shaping modern reggae. Wycliffe “Steely” Johnson and Cleveland “Clevie” Browne were known for their work at Studio 2000 and for launching their own Steely & Clevie label. They were pioneers in digital reggae, helping to bring new sounds into the dancehall scene. On this riddim, three well-known artists made their mark. Junior Tucker brought his song “Under My Skin,” adding smooth vocals and catchy hooks. Tucker is also known for his hit “Somebody’s Watching Me,” which reached UK chart success in the 1990s. Sugar Minott’s “Gwaan My Youth” delivered his signature roots style. Minott was already respected for his classic album “Black Roots.” Wayne Wonder completed the trio with “Baby You And I.” Wayne Wonder would later find international fame with “No Letting Go” in 2003. The Rockfort Rock Riddim’s roots drop made it a staple in 1993 reggae playlists and a lasting favorite in sound system sessions.
