Sunlight Riddim (2004) – Playhouse Records
100 BPM · 6B 2004 Dancehall 14 cuts
Playhouse Records’ Sunlight Riddim landed in 2004 with Richard Martin, better known as Richie D, at the controls. By then, Playhouse had already carved out a lane in the early-2000s juggling era, pushing music that could work in the dance and on radio without losing the cheeky edge that keeps dancehall moving. The set was also issued as part of VP’s Riddim Driven series, which helped give it wider circulation beyond Jamaica.
Sunlight is one of those bright, mid-tempo riddims that feels airy on the surface but still leaves room for bass weight and quick-chat vocals. The groove has a smooth, breezy bounce rather than the harder digital stomp of some of its contemporaries, which makes the singjay and lovers cuts hit cleanly. Calibe and Elephant Man’s “Walking On Sunshine” sets the tone with a playful, feel-good approach, while Lady Saw’s “Can U Dance” turns the rhythm into a rude and commanding dance-floor moment. Notch brings a slicker, melody-led sensibility on “Sensimelia” and “Truly Call My Own, ” and Red Rat’s “Let My Music Play” nods to the pop-conscious side of the era.
The lineup also runs through Christopher’s “It’s Over, ” Delly Ranks’ “Regular Girl, ” Kid Kurupt and Flava Unit’s “Sexaholic, ” Mad Cobra’s “Any Man, ” Mr. Easy’s “Caribbean Queen, ” Nicky B’s “I Only Want To Love You, ” Voice Mail’s “What Ah Ting, ” and Wayne Marshall’s “Still My Number One. ” It is a riddim with enough range to move from flirtation to outright slackness, and that balance is what gives Sunlight its staying power.
