REGGAE’S GONE COUNTRY RIDDIM produced by VP RECORDS 2011

VP Records turned Reggae’s Gone Country into a novelty with real musical bite, and the 2011 set works best when it trusts the singers rather than the gimmick. The project pairs Kingston voices with classic country songs, with production split between VP’s camp and Nashville touchpoints, giving the record a polished, crossover sheen instead of a raw roots feel. That smoothness is part of the point: the rhythm beds are airy, the guitar and steel-guitar colors are bright, and the arrangements leave room for the songs to breathe.

The strongest cuts come from singers who know how to sell a tune without forcing it. Beres Hammond turns “He Stopped Loving Her Today” into a warm, aching plea, while Freddie McGregor’s “The King of the Road” comes off light and jaunty. Gramps Morgan works “Feels So Right” into a silky, late-night groove, and L. U. S. T. ’s “Flowers on the Wall” plays like a Kingston jug-band joke that still lands musically. Richie Stephens handles “Wolverton Mountain” with easy assurance, while Luciano brings his usual velvet tone to “He Have To Go. ” Busy Signal’s “The Gambler” is one of the set’s more modern-feeling performances, and Tarrus Riley gives “The Chair” a clean, soulful lift. The duets also matter: Romain Virgo and Larry Gatlin’s “California” is the most direct Nashville-to-Jamaica handshake on the album. Etana and Duane Stephenson add range, even if their covers are more controlled than transformative.

What gives the release its lasting appeal is the cast. VP lined up some of the era’s most dependable Jamaican singers and let them test how far country writing could travel through reggae phrasing. It’s a crossover concept, but the voices keep it grounded.
