Quan’s “Girl I Need You” is the quickest way into Xpert Productions’ Random Thoughts Riddim, because it sits right at the sweet spot between clean roots phrasing and a more modern, upbeat pull. The 2018 six-track set keeps the focus tight, with Mr Gold’N’s “Hungry Feel” and King Tappa’s “Rough Times” adding some bite, while Mr Expert’s “Praises” sounds tailor-made for the producer’s neat, uncluttered approach. There’s a nice tension here between the conscious angle and the lovers-rock touch, especially when Tahera Paul closes things out on “Without You, ” and King-I’s “Serious Something” adds another thoughtful turn.
