PUNANY RIDDIM produced by SIRI RECORDS 1995
Punany Overview
In 1995, dancehall took a new turn with the arrival of the Punany Riddim. The sound was shaped by the creative mind of its riddim architect, who blended classic dancehall energy with fresh, modern touches. The journey began in the studio, where SIRI RECORDS, a label known for pushing boundaries in Jamaican music, brought together some of the most powerful voices in the scene. SIRI RECORDS had already built a reputation for quality releases and had a hand in launching several successful careers. From the start, the Punany Riddim was built for the dancefloor. The label’s producers made sure every cut had a tight, infectious groove. As soon as Admiral Bailey voiced "Punany," the riddim found its anthem. Bailey, already famous for the hit "Big Belly Man," brought his unmistakable style and humor. Bounty Killa followed with "New Gun," adding his signature gruff delivery. At that time, Bounty Killa was rising fast, later earning the 2002 MOBO Award for Best Reggae Act. Carl Meeks, known for his unique vocal tone, stepped in with "Badda Dem," showing why he was respected in both reggae and dancehall circles. Commander Shad’s "Step Up" and Cutty Ranks’ "Grizzle" added more fire. Cutty Ranks had already made waves with tracks like "Limb By Limb." The mix was rounded out by Daddy Blue’s "Rammer," Joseph Stepper’s "Bumper," Major Worries’ "Babylon Boops," Ninjaman’s "Border Clash," and Risto Benjie’s "Gimmie Di Money." Even today, selectors and DJs keep the energy of 1995 alive, spinning these tunes and reminding everyone why the Punany Riddim is still a dancehall favorite.
