Passion Riddim (1996) – Jammys Records

Passion Riddim came out in 1996 from King Jammys, with L. James credited on the production side. It sits right in the middle of the label’s mid-90s dancehall run, when the sound was still tough and digital but clean enough for big radio and sound system play.

The juggling has that sharp, lean Jammys feel: forward-driving drums, bright synth stabs, and a groove that leaves enough space for the deejays to work. It’s a riddim that can carry gun talk, flirtation, and straight party tension without losing its edge. Bounty Killer’s “Down Grade Mi Gun” is the anchor cut, all bark and swagger, while Lady Saw’s “Wuk With You” pushes the riddim into more playful, carnivalesque territory. Hawkeye’s “Rising Star” and Angel Doolas’ “God Sent Brata” show how well the rhythm handled voices with different attack and tone.

There’s a strong mix of mid-tier selectors and bigger names, which gives the project its character. Candy Man turns in “A You Mi Love, ” Chuck Fender brings “War Dem A Defend, ” and Paul Elliott’s “Stop Talk” adds a conscious, no-nonsense edge. Filco Ranks, Gurt Up, FX Boom, Ites Man, Michael Buckley, Polly Famous, Rangotan, Terrical, and Captain Kirk all help flesh out the juggling, and the instrumental version leaves the rhythm exposed enough to hear the arrangement doing its work.
